Story By: RACE OF CHAMPIONS – LEHIGHTON, PA – Daryl Lewis, Jr., commonly referred to as “DLJ” from Ontario, N.Y., will head to Mahoning Valley Speedway on Saturday looking for success in the season opening event for the Race of Champions Modified Series.
Lewis, who is the son of former driver and now Race of Champions Hall-of-Fame inductee, Daryl, Sr., is approaching the event at the 1/4-mile oval with his own outlook on the event.
“Mahoning is a challenge for us,” began Lewis. “It is a tough track and there are drivers there that are regulars who definitely have an experience advantage over us. Our team has worked hard and we are constantly trying to improve and get better. You don’t get better by staying at home, you get better by racing. We are going there with our goal to finish first and then we will work on the overall result.”
Lewis and the Lewis Racing team have shown speed over the past few seasons with the Series and have been a regular contender but have yet to visit victory lane. Lewis is determined to find that success and build the consistency that may lead him to a championship.
The Lewis family is just one of several families that competes in the Race of Champions family of Series, which helps make the Series so unique in its lineage. The Lewis’, Catalano, Leaty, Beers, Hirschman and many other families have graced the Series for decades passing down the art of racing modifieds from generation-to-generation.
Lewis’ brother Andy has introduced his youngest son Andrew to the new Race of Champions 602 Sportsman Modified Series which will make its debut later this Summer.
“Family is what this all about for us,” stated Lewis. “The racing is a reason for us to get together, work together and enjoy this great sport together. We are looking forward to another fun season, hopefully with more great results.”
Qualifying for the 75-lap Series opener will begin at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 24 along with a full card of Mahoning racing.
