Column By: JOHN DOUGLAS / RPW – DOVER, DE – A report surfaced early Wednesday morning that Dover International Speedway would relinquish a 2021 NASCAR Cup Series race date to its partner track Nashville Superspeedway.
The speedway, owned by Dover Motorsports Inc., has held both XFINITY and Truck Series events in the past with the most recent being held in 2011.
The Speedway, which has laid dormant for nine years, will have some renovations to apply to the grounds to prepare for its first Cup Series date.
The Associated Press report noted that serious discussion took place after the 2019 NASCAR Awards Banquet in regards to getting a race date in the Nashville area as soon as possible after the Banquet’s success.
There is no word on how this will affect the prior efforts to bring a Cup Series date to the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, which was spearheaded by Speedway Motorsports Inc. COO Marcus Smith.
