RPW Column By: JESSY MILLER / RPW – FONTANA, CA – Auto Club Speedway is one of NASCAR’s most challenging tracks and today, but it was Alex Bowman who ended up in Victory Lane.
Bowman got his first career NASCAR Cup Series win at Chicagoland Speedway in 2019.
This is his second Cup victory and after the race on the start finish line he said, “Promised my buddy Aaron we would all get matching 88 tattoos if I won… I think I have to get a tattoo now.” Bowman took the checkered flag with almost a ten second lead over second place No. 18 Kyle Busch.
In Victory Lane, Bowman’s FS1 interview was with Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon via headset. Joy told Bowman that, “Less than 150 NASCAR drivers have won 2 races in their career…” This win is also great for Bowman because it has boosted him into the lead of the Cup Series Standings so far with 6 play off points.
Next in line was Denny Hamlin (1 win) with 6 points and in 3rd was Joey Logano (1 win) with 5 points. This means that one of every manufacturer has a win this season. Last season it took ten races for this to occur (stat via Dustin Long).
Not to mention the fact that Bowman also got his first stage win ever today at the completion of stage one after qualifying in 3rd place. Bowman followed it up by being in 2nd place for the conclusion of the second stage. He was also fastest in both practices held earlier this weekend.
