Column By: JOHN DOUGLAS / RPW – STUART, VA – Glen Wood is one of the most historic figures in NASCAR racing. Starting as a driver, Wood ran the original NASCAR Modified Stock class we now know today as the Whelen Modified Tour. Wood’s time in the sport predates NASCAR’s most popular series the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and Wood, along with his brother Leonard, was there at the start.
For 68 years the Wood Brothers and their family have tweaked, tuned and massaged race cars so that others could find victory lane. David Pearson, most notably, was the second all-time win leader in Cup Series history. His recent passing along with the news of Glen Wood’s passing today, mark one of the most important era’s of NASCAR moving ever further into history.
A team statement through social media was released not long after the news of the Wood Brothers patriarch’s passing:
“It’s with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of team founder and family patriarch Glen Wood this morning. We want to thank family, friends, our small-town Virginia community of Patrick County, as well as everyone in the NASCAR community for their unwavering support.”
Funeral arrangements have not been announced, however the team’s social media account also noted that the family will have a private service.
