Column By: JESSY MILLER / RPW – DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The Super Bowl of the race world, the Daytona 500 is held every year in February at Daytona International Speedway- this season it’s on February 18th, 2018.
Most fans and drivers count the Daytona 500 as the start of race season, although it isn’t the first race held in the year, nor is it the first race for the NASCAR top tier series.
The Friday and Saturday before the 500 the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR XFINITY series have their season-opening races. The week before all of this is known as Speedweeks!
The Clash At Daytona is a non-points race held the Sunday before the 500 to get fans and drivers riled up for the upcoming season. Around that same time, the NASCAR K&N East season opener is held just a few miles south at New Smyrna Speedway.
Later in the week, on Thursday, the ‘Can-Am Duels at Daytona are held. Drivers are split into two groups and get a chance to compete in either the first or second duel which sets the field for the ‘Great American Race.’
There are a lot of changes coming this season…drivers and teams are switching around and of course; new rules. We’ll figure this all out together, as NASCAR Nation!
Let’s get our race on!
