Story By: RACE OF CHAMPIONS – ELMA, N.Y. – Race of Champions management is announcing a new iRacing, one off event, “Presque Isle Downs & Casino Race of Champions Festival” that will begin on Thursday, May 14 and conclude Sunday, May 31l, culminating in a 250-lap Race of Champions Modified Series event, complete with tire changes. The race will take place at the virtual “Bullring” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Drivers from their respective Race of Champions divisions will be guaranteed starters in their respective division events. For the Race of Champions “250” on Sunday, May 31, Race of Champions Modified Series competitors will be guaranteed starters for the 250. NASCAR Modified Tour drivers, who earned points in the 2019 season as well as Modified Racing Series and Tri-Track Racing Series competitors will be invited to the i-Racing event as guaranteed starters in the virtual “Race of Champions 250”. The race will start 40 competitors and will also feature an “open” qualifying format, should all 40 positions not be filled. The maximum number of entries for the event will be 62. Racing will begin at 7:30pm.
Modeled after “Presque Isle Downs & Casino Race of Champions” Weekend, which is held at Lake Erie Speedway each September, competitors from across all divisions will have an opportunity to compete. Four Cylinders, Midgets, Street Stocks, Super Stocks, Late Models and Sportsman (SK) Modifieds will have their turn at virtual glory.
The Race of Champions Dash Series Four Cylinders will utilize the Volkswagen Jetta TDI as the only car permitted for competition in their 33-lap feature. The Race of Champions T.Q. Midget Series will utilize the asphalt Sprint Car, based on no asphalt midget of any type being available for competition and will be running a 39-lap feature. The Race of Champion Super Stock Series will utilize the NASCAR Chevrolet Impala SS Xfinity Car circa 2011 for their event for their National Parts Peddler 40-lap feature. The Race of Champions Street Stock Series will make its debut in the virtual world using the iRacing Street Stock running a 35-lap feature. The Race of Champions Late Models will utilize the Super Late Model division and the Race of Champions Sportsman Modified Series will race the SK Modified, while both run 70-lap features in honor of the 70th Annual Race of Champions Weekend slated to take place this coming September at Lake Erie Speedway.
The Four Cylinder Dash Series and “T.Q. Midget Series” events will take place on Thursday, May 14 at 7:30pm.
The Super Stock and Street Stocks will take center stage on Tuesday, May 19 at 7:30pm, due to scheduling.
The Late Models and Sportsman Modifieds will run on Thursday, May 28.
All fields will be capped at 40-cars. Crashing in the qualifying race will eliminate a competitor from the completion of that race. There will be no “resets” used for feature race competition and in accordance
The Tour Modifieds will take part in the “Grand daddy” of racing events and run a full 250-laps with starting positions based on time trials and “B”-Mains to set the field for the 250 on Sunday, May 31 at 7:30pm.
“We would all like to be at the tracks, doing what we do best,” offered Joe Skotnicki, Race of Champions. “This is an alternative to bring our folks together and highlight each division and let people have some fun. We’ve continued to adjust things a bit and this idea was presented to us, so we picked up the ball and ran with it. I hope everyone can enjoy it a bit until we have our opportunity to go racing for real.”
The Series will conclude with a “one-off” event taking place at Irwindale Speedway and open to the top-30 in the point standings as of the final event, with select driver’s from this series and others earning an invitation to the “Virtual RoC Invitational Showdown”.
