Kaden Honeycutt Dominates Richmond en route to Second NASCAR Truck Series win
RPW EXCLUSIVE COLUMN BY: Steven Brien / RACE PRO WEEKLY – Kaden Honeycutt dominated Saturday afternoon’s Black’s Tire 250 at Richmond Raceway, leading 225 of 250 laps and holding off Tricon Garage teammate Corey Heim to earn his second NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series victory of the season.
The win is Honeycutt’s second of the season, and first since Watkins Glen in May.
“We’ve had a rough couple of weeks,” Honeycutt said after exiting his No. 11 Toyota. “What a dominating day… I’ve never been able to do something like that before.”
Honeycutt recently announced that he will become a father, as his wife, Jessica, is pregnant with their first child.
“I love Jessica, she’s done everything for me for the last six years that we’ve been together,” he added. “I’m just so thankful to be able to drive a truck like this.”
Heim finished second, Christian Eckes was third and polesitter Shane van Gisbergen finished fourth.
Grant Enfinger finished fifth after leading 22 laps on strategy and restarting on the front row for the final restart.
“I think the strategy did go our way,” Enfinger said. “We just weren’t good enough in the short run.”
Jake Garcia finished sixth and narrowed his deficit to the cutline to just 21 points.
Chandler Smith finished seventh, 16-year-old Tristan McKee was eighth in his series debut, and Gio Ruggiero and Daniel Hemric rounded out the top 10.
Honeycutt held off van Gisbergen to win stage one.
Enfinger finished third, Ty Majeski fourth and Layne Riggs fifth. Smith, Eckes, Tyler Ankrum, McKee and Nick Leitz also earned stage points.
Honeycutt continued his dominant performance by winning Stage 2 and sweeping both stages. He has now won four stages this season, second-most in the series behind Riggs, who has nine.
Riggs finished second in the stage, followed by Enfinger, Eckes and van Gisbergen. Smith was sixth, while Leitz, Hemric, Heim and Garcia rounded out the top 10.
Van Gisbergen was penalized for an uncontrolled tire during his Stage 3 pit stop, sending him to the rear of the field.
With 33 to go, Stewart Friesen fighting for the last spot in the Chase lost a tire and crashed hard into the turn one wall, all but ending his postseason hopes.
Friesen now sits 20 points below Ankrum for the final spot in the Chase heading into the regular season finale next week.
The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series returns next Saturday afternoon at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the regular-season finale.
