SVG MASTERCLASS: Shane van Gisbergen Dominant in O’Reilly Series Victory at Sonoma

RPW EXCLUSIVE COLUMN BY: Steven Brien / RPW – SONOMA, CA – Shane van Gisbergen delivered another road-course masterclass Saturday night, leading 66 laps to win the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Pit Boss/FoodMaxx 250 at Sonoma Raceway.

“What an amazing car,” Van Gisbergen said after climbing from his No. 9 Chevrolet. “I saved enough [fuel] early.”

The victory was van Gisbergen’s second of the season and his first since winning at Circuit of the Americas in March.

Connor Zilisch rallied from the rear of the field and overcame a speeding penalty in Stage 1 to finish second.

“A caution to bunch us back up would have been nice,” Zilisch said. “We were just matching each other the entire run there, and he [SVG} was probably saving fuel and managing his stuff.”

Rookie Brent Crews finished third, boosting him to above the cutline with six races remaining until the chase begins.

“Felt like we passed 190 cars today,” Crews said. “Overall, a good day for us, we got the most points there.”

Viking Motorsports teammates Anthony Alfredo and Parker Retzlaff rounded out the top five.

“This is the best opportunity I’ve ever had,” Alfredo said. “A great day for us to build on.”

“I think that we’re building something strong,” Retzlaff said. “We got the second and third most points of the day for Viking Motorsports.”

Carson Kvapil finished sixth, followed by Corey Day, Sam Mayer, Jesse Love, and Sheldon Creed to complete the top ten.

Taylor Gray ran out of fuel on the final lap while running fourth and fell to 29th, one lap down.

Alfredo held off Crews to win Stage 1, the first stage victory of his career. Gray finished third, Retzlaff fourth and Day fifth. Austin Hill, Ross Chastain, Will Rodgers, Josh Bilicki and Alex Labbe also earned stage points.

Van Gisbergen, Zilisch and several others pitted late in the stage to maintain track position for the remainder of the race.

The caution flew after Kyle Sieg spun with Lavar Scott in Turn 11, leaving debris from Sieg’s right-rear tire carcass on the racetrack.

Brandon Jones slowed and pulled into the garage with mechanical issues on Lap 15, ending the day for the No. 20 Toyota.

Harrison Burton spun entering Turn 1 on Lap 29 after contact from Sammy Smith while running fifth.

Chastain later suffered a mechanical failure that brought out the third caution on Lap 30.

Van Gisbergen, Love and several others again pitted before the conclusion of Stage 2 to preserve track position.

Zilisch stayed out to win Stage 2, his fourth stage victory of the season.

Sammy Smith finished second in the stage, followed by Creed, Crews and Kvapil. Mayer, Rajah Caruth, Ryan Sieg, Labbe and Rodgers also collected stage points.

Justin Allgaier endured a difficult afternoon, spinning off course twice. The first incident came on Lap 25 after contact from Mayer, while the second occurred on Lap 62. Allgaier later made an unscheduled pit stop in the final stage and finished 26th.

Blaine Perkins also spun twice: first on Lap 2 in Turn 7, then again on Lap 28 in Turn 11 after contact from Day.

Dean Thompson spun in Turn 2 on Lap 53 following contact from Brennan Poole.

With seven laps remaining, Leland Honeyman suffered an engine misfire that ended his race without bringing out a caution.

Last week’s winner, Hill, was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop in the final stage and dropped to a 22nd-place finish.

The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series returns next weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.
