Story By: NICK CZEROW / EVANS MILLS RACEWAY PARK – EVANS MILLS, NY – The Evans Mills Raceway Park is gearing up for the biggest party of the season, the 5th Annual John Burr Classic.
The namesake of the two-day event, John Burr called races from the announcers booth all across the North Country and Super Dirt Week from the early stages of many race tracks including the Evans Mills Raceway Park where he began his career in 1967.
Burr, respected and admired by many left his mark on New York’s racing scene and was inducted into the Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame among others. In present day, we are glad to be joined by members of the Burr family who take part in waving the green flag on our Kinney Drugs Modifieds feature.
The 5th Annual John Burr Classic is once-again a two-day show with the biggest news of the year that the ISMA/MSS Supermodifieds will run an additional 40-lap feature on Friday night as part of their Championship Weekend.
The weekend is made possible by close and trusted friends at TJ Toyota in Potsdam, Waite Toyota in Watertown, Ken Tibbles Roofing, NAPA Auto Parts, Old World Industries (Peak & Blue Def), and the United States Army who will be performing a fly over in conjunction with the National Anthems on Friday night.
The ISMA/MSS Supermodifieds series enters the weekend with four drivers in contention for the Championship to be decided at Saturday’s show. Trent Stephens leads the group ahead Otto Sitterly, Mike Ordway Jr., and Mark Sammut.
The show on Friday September 13th will include a 40-lap feature for the ISMA/MSS Supermodifieds, the Small Block Supers Championship Series, Excess Storage Pro Late Models, FENIX U-Pull U-Save Syracuse Thunderstocks, and open practice for all other divisions racing on Saturday.
Saturday’s show on September 14th includes the 100-lap ISMA/MSS Championship Finale, the John Burr Classic Memorial 75 for Kinney Drugs Modifieds, Stewart’s Shops Sport Compacts, Classic Asphalt Modified Series, and a National Qualifier event for the Christman Fuel Service INEX Legends.
The Christman Fuel Service INEX Legends will race double heats to set their feature starting positions. This means each driver will run their first heat race.
Then that heat finish will be inverted top to bottom with the same cars and run again later in the program. The average finish position of each driver will determine their starting spot in the 35 lap National Qualifier race.
Each driver to finish first among their INEX/U.S. Legend Car division (Young Lion, Semi-Pro, Pro, Masters) will earn a starting spot at the Asphalt Nationals at Dominion Raceway in Woodford, VA.
The first installment of the ISMA/MSS Championship Weekend at Evans Mills in 2023 saw Mike McVetta claim the series title from Otto Sitterly, while Jeff Abold made a bold three-wide pass on the outside to win the feature.
Features winners from the 4th Annual John Burr Classic in 2023 include Jeff Abold, Andre Roggie, Tyler Papin, Kyle Hart, Dan Kapuscinski, Jock Symonds, and Kevin Greenfield.
