Story By: KYLE SOUZA / DOUG COBY RACING – STAFFORD, CT – Doug Coby came up one spot short of ending the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season in Victory Lane on Saturday, September 25 at Stafford Motor Speedway.
Coby drove the No. 10 Mayhew Tools entry to a second-place finish in the NAPA Fall Final 150 to close the 14-race schedule on the podium.
Coby qualified fifth in Mayhew Tools pole qualifying and ran inside the top-five for the whole race — one that went green until the final 25 laps. During the only pit stop of the night, the Mayhew Tools team went to work — putting fresh rear tires on the car in quick fashion — and giving Coby a shot at the win with their strong pit stop.
Coby edged Justin Bonsignore to the line for a green-white-checkered restart, but couldn’t quite seal the deal. Bonsignore earned his first Stafford win, while Coby chased him to the line for second. Coby’s finish was enough to score him a fifth-place finish in the driver championship standings, even after missing a race in June. The Doug Coby Racing team also sealed third in the owner’s standings to close the year.
“Justin just had drive-off the corner and I was really tight at the end,” Coby said. “I tried to pinch him down a bit, but I just couldn’t get him. We were just a little bit off. During the long run, we were not great, then good, then not bad. I think if it stayed green, I might have been able to run Justin down. I drove the crap out of the car trying, but we just didn’t have enough. Solid day for our Mayhew Tools team.”
