Story By: KYLE SOUZA / DOUG COBY RACING – MILFORD, CT – Doug Coby is looking to add a fifth NAPA Spring Sizzler victory to his resume this weekend at Stafford Motor Speedway.
In race two of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, Coby will return to his home track on April 25 to drive the Mayhew Tools No. 10, coming off a sixth-place finish in the Whelen Modified Tour opener at Martinsville Speedway.
The Milford, Connecticut, six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion, has 12 victories in 58 career starts at Stafford in tour competition and is also a two-time track champion and multiple-time winner.
“We would have liked to have a stronger run at Martinsville, but if you look at our statistics at Stafford, it’s been a good track for us,” Coby said. “There is a tire rule and some pit stop rules in play for the Sizzler, but we will have a fast car. It’s the Spring Sizzler. It’s one of the biggest races that you mark on your calendar to help kick-off the season. With it being our first New England race of the year, the history of the Sizzler, and the list of drivers who have won that race… I’m excited to go back there.”
Coby will also look to continue a streak of six consecutive top-three finishes at Stafford, dating back to 2018 — a span that includes two victories for the Mayhew Tools team.
The 49th annual NAPA Spring Sizzler Sunday includes the Whelen Modified Tour along with two of Stafford’s local open-wheel divisions — the SK Modifieds and SK Light Modifieds — along with the Open Vintage Mods. General admission tickets are sold out due to Connecticut capacity restrictions due to COVID-19. The Whelen Modified Tour will practice from 11:35-12:35 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 3 p.m. The 49th annual NAPA Spring Sizzler is slated for the green flag at 5 p.m. The race will air live on NBC Sports Gold via TrackPass, where fans can watch the entire remaining Whelen Modified Tour slate for just $2.99 per month.
