Column By: BRITTANY NUTILE / RPW – THOMPSON, CT – Doug Coby won the Thompson 150, Wednesday mid-week race at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, putting an end to the stranglehold Justin Bonsignore has had on victory lane at the Connecticut track.
Doug Coby won the pole for the race and looked to have a dominant car through out the day. Doug led the first laps and it seemed to be a repeat of Stafford, leading several circuits and passing most of the field.
However, unlike Stafford, Coby had strong pit stops and was aggressive, taking the win. He was extra excited afterwards because it was an early birthday present for himself. His birthday was this past Sunday where he turn the big 4-0.
Going into the race today, Bonsignore was looking for his seventh win at Thompson. His winning streak has been over the course of a year and a half and he’s been very successful at the speedway.
Bonsignore started the race fourth and quickly got up to the top two. However, he couldn’t get by Coby for the lead. He restarted second after a caution and had a battle with Craig Lutz for second, but couldn’t quite get up to the lead.
Bonsignore ended up in the runner-up spot, ending his win streak at Thompson but still had a really good race.
Craig Lutz finished the race third and was so close to getting his first win there. He did extremely well for being in competition with a multi- time champion on the tour (Coby) and a multi-time winner at Thompson (Bonsignore).
Lutz was in very tough competition but held his own and led some laps on the day. However, he had a late race restart and Coby and Bonsignore got a better jump than Craig.
The next NWMT race will be at Oswego Speedway on Saturday, July 31.
