Story By: KYLE SOUZA / NASCAR – DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Dave Sapienza’s quest for his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship has come to an abrupt halt.
Sapienza, a Riverhead, New York, native, was injured in a last-lap crash at Wall Stadium Speedway on May 18, and injuries sustained in the accident will keep him out of the car for the near future. The story was first reported by RaceDayCT.com on Wednesday.
He entered the final corner of the Jersey Shore 150 racing for the third spot, but contact sent Sapienza and Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Timmy Catalano crashing into the infield barrier.
“It sucks,” Sapienza told RaceDayCT.
No one will drive the car in Sapienza’s absence for the next event on the schedule at Seekonk Speedway on June 1. But a former Whelen Southern Modified Tour and nine-time Bowman Gray Stadium Modified champion driver will drive the car at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on June 5.

Sapienza has 68 career Whelen Modified Tour starts over six years of competition. He finished a best of second at his home track, Riverhead Raceway, in 2017. Sapienza’s car owner, Judy Thilberg, also posted a note to fans on Facebook about the news.
