Column By: BRITTANY NUTILE / RPW – THOMPSON, CT – Keith Rocco won Sunday’s Sunoco Modified race at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.
Rocco and Todd Owen battled the whole race for the lead, but the veteran led every lap of the 30-lap feature.
Owen was so close at some points of the race but, in the end couldn’t get it done.
“In the heat race, our car was very good,” Owen said during an interview after qualifying. “We’re looking forward to the race and hopefully come out of the race in the first spot.”
However, he came up short to Rocco.
“Todd’s good,” Rocco said after the race. “He’s a fierce competitor and ran me hard the entire race. Last year was fun…passing the lead back and forth. This year, I was defending the lead the entire time.”
Rocco is going for his fifth Sunoco Modified Championship this year.
There were other battles on the track that were good during the whole race. Woody Pitkat raced well after starting sixth. He made his way through the field and at one point was running third, trying to get the top two spots but couldn’t quite get there.
Mike Christopher Jr., Glen Reen, and Troy Talman all stayed in the top 10 and ran very well. Reen and Talman had a couple of battles that were good. At one point in the race, Talman moved Reen up the track and got the position and Reen was forced back a few spots. However, he came back up and finished fifth while Talman was sixth.
The Sunoco Modified series next race is May 19th.
Tom Carey III won the Late model race at Thompson Speedway Sunday. Another good battle between the top two drivers between Carey and William Wall. Wall led the first seven laps but then Carey took the top spot and held it the rest of the way.
“I couldn’t ask for a better weekend,” Carry said after the race. “Every time we were on the track, we were on top of the charts. Won our qualifier and then won the feature…a perfect weekend.”
Woody Pitkat had a great Late Model race as well, starting 10th and made his way up the ladder to finish third.
The Late model’s next race is May 19th at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.
