Story By: DAN KAPUSCINSKI / JASON SIMMONS RACING – OSWEGO, NY – It was an up and down weekend for Tyler Thompson as part of the 17th annual running of the King of the Concrete inside the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC, but when all was said and done, Thompson left the Carolinas with a fifth-place finish in the weekend’s $3,000 to win, 50-lap finale.
Thompson and team struggled to find speed much of the weekend with their flat kart, forcing the No. 98 to the King of the Concrete consi on Saturday afternoon. Fortunately, Thompson won the consi to give him his first ever qualifying spot in the prestigious 50-lap championship event.
Starting deep in the 15-kart lineup, Thompson saved everything for the KoC championship riding his way through the field across two 25-lap segments. When the final checkered flag fell, Thompson trailed Bob Baker, Dustin Heath, Cameron Carter and Philip Schneider across the line for a hard-fought top five finish.
“It was a long weekend, but it felt good to walk out of there with a top five,” said Thompson. “Thanks to Slack Karts and Performance Manufacturing for providing us the tools we needed to be competitive. I’m glad we finally made that race and had a chance to compete for a top five.”
Friday night action saw Thompson take second in Clone Champ and fourth in Clone Heavy with a third place run in Saturday’s Clone Champ main and another third in the King of the Champ feature event.
Thompson’s attention now turns to TQ Midget action with the first of three Indoor Auto Racing Championship events coming up on January 4-5 in Allentown, PA inside the PPL Center.
