Story By: RACE OF CHAMPIONS – WILLIAMSON, NY – Ryan Preece of Berlin, Connecticut, who currently drives for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity and Whelen Modified Series, has agreed to drive a L2 Autosport entry in the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series Tribute to “Pops” Leaty 75 at Spencer Speedway on Friday, August 31.
Preece, who has won twice in the Xfinity Series at Iowa Speedway in 2017 and this past season at Bristol Motor Speedway is also the 2013 NASCAR Whelen Modified Series champion.
“Mike (Leaty) called and asked if I wanted to drive one of this families cars and I jumped at the chance,” stated Preece, who will already be in the area for an event at Oswego Speedway on Saturday. “I’ve run several times with the Race of Champions and I’m looking forward to it. I knew Mike’s Grandfather and this a great tribute to ‘Pops’, we are going to enjoy this night and opportunity.”
The Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series will be competing for over $5,500 in lap money that is a bonus to the racing purse, with money raised by the Catalano and Leaty families. The Modifieds be joined by the Lancaster Speedway type Street Stocks who will compete for $500-to-win along with the Race of Champions Four Cylinder Dash Series which will race for $333.33-to-win in their second event of the season to make up an exciting evening of racing action.
In addition to racing Heintzelman’s BBQ Pit Food Truck will be on hand as well two other local food trucks for snacks and desert items. Cavallaro-Neubauer Chevrolet Buick will present victory lane for the Modified race and have vehicles on display with information available in the midway.
The Sodus Microd club will have a display as well a brief demonstration prior to the feature racing action.
